Akatsuki no Yona review
RECOMMENDED FOR SHOUJO READERS.

Ended up dropping this manga so it will only be a short review.

Usually I'm able to endure a few cliche character tropes but these characters were such caricatures of every sappy profile in the book I honestly couldn't.
Main lead girl is interesting enough - very emotional - would not necessarily call her 'independent' or 'strong'. It's the old case of a mangaka saying:
"Hey look: my character is so strong. You know this because I am TELLING you she's strong, not SHOWING you her strength". This just doesn't work for me; especially when I have to endure a character getting injured every few pages to be gimmickly stiched up/saved by their love interest.

Main love interest - complete tsundere to the point it's frustrating. This also completely opposes how servile he was in the first few chapters. I mean I get it's a part of the story that he's her 'bodyguard' etc. but it just seems like a mismatch of traits and leaves me confused/frustrated. On one hand his personality is that of a tsundere, on the other his role in the story is completely servile and doting and it doesn't make sense and seems completely manufactured/one-dimensional.

Art: I mean its good and proportional, but it's a bit cheap. Best summed up by Hayao Miyazaki when he said: "They make their characters overly expressive for cheap laughs at the expense of beautiful art".

Story: Started off good. The twist at the beginning was pretty shocking. Fell off completely. No real direction afterwards and I was confused as to what the chars were trying to achieve/where they were going.

Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete review
Let me start by saying that I’ve never come across a piece of art as poignant and life-changing as Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete. As soon as I started it, my mind seemed to leave my body and get sucked into the student life of Sou Akiyama. I became entranced with his nuanced character; his thoughts, his actions and his motivations all came through to me as if he was a missing part of myself that I had just found. The first thing I noticed was the creative parallel to a visual novel character by the name of Sou Hiyori, who shares a lot of traits with Sou Akiyama, besides the obvious name similarity. They both keep to themselves and rarely open up but still deeply care about their friends. I’ve come to love this ‘rat’ character archetype, which Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete explores more deeply than I ever thought possible. The protagonist is dark-haired and contemplative, like me, yet quietly intellectual and empathetic. I personally relate to his choices and have often caught myself speaking fluent Japanese when I subconsciously channel Sou inside of me. I could never find a connection that powerful from the third-highest ranked manga, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Just as with the character design and writing, Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete thoroughly immersed me with its impeccable art and world imagining. With each panel I felt more and more at home within the author’s vision. In fact, I’ve become nostalgic for the fictional classrooms and roads and sunsets that hypnotized me when I first read this manga. It’s comforting in a way I can’t describe, like this world is a distant memory I didn’t know I had. This inexplicable aspect alone brings Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete well above Fullmetal Alchemist.

A more tangible quality of Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete is its ability to comment on society and us as the people who live in it. From the development of relationships between characters to the deliberate dysfunction of the school, the author provides us with a peek into his view of humanity as a whole. At first it seems that your ordinary existential nihilism compels his writing, but after a few chapters it evolves into something else entirely. The philosophical undertone shifts to optimistic humanitarianism and then to egotistical altruism faster than you can say “Sou”. Despite its complexity in themes, Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete remains grounded and accessible enough to not seem condescending or pretentious. I think that quality sets it apart from other psychological dramas of similar acclaim.

Although I have no hesitation calling Ushinawareta Mirai no Motomete a masterpiece, I can’t justify thinking of it as the greatest manga of all time until it runs for a little while or until I read it through a few more times. My integrity as an experienced critic prevents me from placing it higher than Berserk, but it’s a very close call, and my placement may change as new volumes are released. For the time being, though, its ranking is deserved, and I hope I can help publicize this hidden gem with this review.

Overall 10/10, can’t wait to see it reach the top.

Kiryuuin Kaya ni Chi wo Suwareru dake no Kantan na Oshigoto review
This starts off as an interesting vampire series, but winds up falling flat. Conflict between vampires and church isn't new, but this manga takes everything as given and never develops the theme DESPITE Vampire vs. Church being the main source of conflict. The manga abruptly switches to Man vs. Vampire for the final arc's conflict, but again nothing is explained, resolved, or changed.

The world, which is genuinely interesting, isn't explored at all beyond two small locales. Characters randomly appear and disappear with neither rhyme nor reason. The MCs past is explored only in flashbacks and lots of exposition. The vampiric female lead's motivations are never voiced. The final "resolution" is a total cop out and in the end I'm not sure what the heck happened.

Some ancillary characters are hard to tell apart, but on the whole people are well drawn. Backgrounds are sketchy, but are good enough to show what goes on on where.

Ecchi content is solely of the "stumble over nothing and fall in someone's crotch/breasts" variety. It adds nothing to the story and only looks out of place.

I'd revisit this series if it were rebooted with better storytelling, but don't particularly want to see a continuation. I think this was originally meant as a longer series, but between sloppy storytelling, both unintentional and enforced by no-doubt impending cancellation, and all the loose ends I can't call this anything but bad.

Maou Dante review
Mao Danta aka Demon Lord Dante is a rough draft of Go Nagai's later work being Devilman. This short series contains some similarities to the Devilman manga, however Mao Dante is a lot more controversial.

The story for this horror manga is centered on Ryo Utsugi, while in the mountains, hears a voice calling out to him being Demon Lord Dante who then devours Ryo. Moments later Dante wreaks havoc on a nearby city where Ryo awakens to discover that he has become Demon Lord Dante. The rest of the series focuses on events similar to The Salem Witch Trials where demons could be masquerading as humans.

Most of the appeal of this story is the atmosphere & its ending being controversial to certain religions, however the point of the story is to express the corruption of sacred ideologies as people shouldn't justify every sin for the sake of the greater good. While most of the story elements are better expressed in Devilman, Mao Dante has its own unique qualities.

For starters, the beginning of this manga is very reminiscent of a Kaiju film (Giant monster) where Dante battles a demon named Xenon in the city. The tone then shifts to a study of human society where the "heroic saviors" act just as cruel as their enemies. Much of the controversy comes from its final chapter as the series revolves around a religious group battling satanists. The last chapter can be misinterpreted as it makes the satanists being in the right side expressing demons are the righteous beings. Personally, I saw it more as an ironic look at human vices as it displays people being arrogant to their crimes of murder while they tend to justify their actions. Main problem with this manga is that it ends on a slight cliffhanger due to the magazine publisher going out of business. If you like this story, then you'll like Devilman a lot more.

Gun Blaze West review
Gun Blaze West is a manga that had potential to become something special, but because of its cancellation, it never got a chance to take off, thus making it difficult to judge the manga. It's fun while it lasts, but it's definitely a manga that won't leave you satisfied. If you've ever read Zombie Powder by Tite Kubo, you know what I'm talking about. Gun Blaze West to Nobuhiro Watsuki is more or less what Zombie Powder is to Tite Kubo.

The story isn't exactly original. Its plot is akin to popular shounen manga such as One Piece and Naruto. It's the "I'm gonna be the best" plot we've all seen a billion times before. For a lot of long-running shounen manga, this isn't necessarily a bad thing because subplots will make up for a lack of intriguing plot. However, in this manga's case, there aren't enough chapters to properly get into any interesting subplots. I will, however, give this manga credit for its unique setting. It utilizes a Wild West theme, and it really helps this manga stand out a little.

The artwork was good, but I can't say I liked the particular style that Watsuki went with for this manga. I personally liked his artwork in Rurouni Kenshin much more. That said, it's still a decent-looking manga. Its style didn't really click with me, but there's no denying that the artwork was done well. The action scenes and backgrounds look good, and the character designs are alright.

It's difficult to judge the characters because they never really had a chance to be fleshed out completely. Viu Bannes is a likable protagonist, but he's also a walking cliche. He's determined to be the best and he's partially motivated by a childhood tragedy. Sound familiar? Of course it does. Mr. Bannes isn't all that different from characters such as Monkey D. Luffy and Naruto Uzumaki. The other characters aren't terribly interesting, but they, too, are likable, even if we don't get a chance to see the characters develop.

I can't deny this manga was enjoyable. The Wild West theme makes for some very entertaining action scenes. The story may not have a chance to go anywhere interesting, but the potential it sets up is what makes this manga so enjoyable to read. Overall, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to everyone, but if you're a fan of Nobuhiro Watsuki and enjoy shounen manga, then go for it. If not, then steer clear. It's a fun read, but its untapped potential makes it hard to recommend.

Destroy and Revolution review
Ah yes, Destroy and Revolution, a story that gone horribly, horribly wrong.
For those of you who are not familiar with Mori Kouji works, he is the creator of two fantastic works-Holyland, the coming of age story of Kamishiro Yuu and Suicide Island about teens that try to survive on an abandoned island. Naturally, as a fan of his works I was excited to read Destroy and Revolution (will now be refereed as D&R). He already proved himself, twice! so what exactly went horribly wrong in this particular story?

Let's about the premise of the plot-we have our main character, Makoto, a timid shy guy who has some sort of telepathic power named "Oneness". He becomes friend with popular guy at his school, Yuuki, which discover about this power and reveal to him that he wants to become a terrorist and change society by force. So far, all is good and well. Sure, the political talk of Yuuki is very juvenile in nature, very naive. And there is a slight feeling that the story will go to someplace positive or at least make the characters develop and see a wider perspective. Instead, it goes in the direction of some sort cheap, action movie. Aside from the explosions the boys causes with this superpower, we discover that the author made every human being (except Yuuki of course) stupid. Yuuki spouts some generic lines such as "society is bad, we need to change it" or "how can some humans live good while other suffer?" and people worldwide shocked as it is some huge discovery. It also made a clear point that Yuuki himself doesn't know the answer to the world problems, but he rely that after he blows building and terrorize the country people will find solutions. This is incredibly stupid because from the beginning he is basically saying that he doesn't have an actual plan but we suppose to support him.
Moving on America getting into the picture and they are presented in a ridiculous, stereotyped way. Their first solution is to kill the terrorists, and if it doesn't works out, they can just drop another atomic bomb on Japan. Yeah, this is super realistic.
Another thing that really bothers me with the story was the fact that no one actually tried to give a proper argument to Yuuki, they all treated him as some sort of all knowing wise elder. Which brings me to the characters.

Let's talk about Makoto, he is our main character. He is timid, powerful and 90% of the time stutters or can't refute even the most basic argument. Sometimes he suddenly gets angry and strong, like some sort of Hulk, but it doesn't fooling anyone. The main thing about the story is that Yuuki (and Makoto too) want to destroy and change society because how unfair and how much they hate it. But after meeting ONE nice girl in his class Makoto worldview changed. Five Minutes after meeting this girl he get seconds thoughts about that hey, maybe society isn't so evil!
He is also, of course, against killing people although in the beginning Yuuki tells him that yes, eventually he would probably kill people, later on-Makoto is surprised that Yuuki actually killing people! what a shock!
Makoto isn't important anyway, he is just the brawn. Let's talk about Yuuki shall we? Yuuki is perfect in any way. He is, basically, Jesus. Maybe it's just me, but I had the feeling that the author really really wanted us to root for him. I mean, how else can you explain the fact that he talks about very basic politics and it makes everyone think that he has a powerful charisma? In real life, he would have been a laughing stock. Imagine a 13 years old kid suddenly realize that the world isn't really fair and tells about it to adults, and the adults are shocked and can only say stuff like "yeah but this is the world we created so it's probably good!", this is how everyone reacts to Yuuki. As the story goes on he gets more and more power hungry and sees himself as a god but all the while he remains cool and calculated because the author doesn't want to hurt his image. He constantly does stupid stuff (because destroying US military bases somehow will save the world) but always PRESENTED as a calculated master mind.
We have some more characters, all of them are very boring. I use the word "boring" because most of them are one dimensional, show up for a very little amount of time or even downright stupid. We have the love interest of Makoto which, as all the females in this manga, is completely useless and only can cry and give motivational speeches to Makoto. We also have the task force against Yuuki, and their supervisors-the Americans, all presented as stupid hot headed trigger happy people of course.

The art. What can be said about it? the art in Mori's works is always very basic. It's good, but not something to brag about it. Still, things are details enough and pleasant to the eye. The backgrounds themselves are not really impressive, some explosions are drawn very good, some are disappointing. As always, the character design is really bad. He has only like, 2-3 models for all the characters, so a lot of them looks pretty much the same but with a different haircut (at least we can different between them), the females looks the same, very weak point.

So, was it an enjoyable read? no, not really. As the plot went on it felt more and more like a cheap action film, when I finished the manga I was positive that "directed by:Micheal Bay" would appear, but nope. It was real. The ending was kinda amusing (although again, very stupid). I think the story would have more potential if it wasn't so focused on this very basics politics and ideals. As I say-don't go political at all, it's boring, it's usually stupid and it's relies heavily on if you agree with the character or don't. Which is why I believe a lot of people did like (and still, would like) the manga. I've seen plenty of comments about people that agree with Yuuki and actually cheer him on. So I guess in some way the author succeeded in his job. If you still find the plot interesting enough you have my blessing to read it, thanks for suffering through my rant, and good day.

== SPOILER FREE ==

I decided to start this manga as I saw it was quite popular among fans of guro, which is one of my favourite genres, so why wouldn't I give a manga with glistening reviews a go!

Story: 3

The first arc of the manga absolutely hooked me in, the characters all looked interesting and everything had such potential. However as I continued reading I very quickly began to realise how repetitive the arcs became, and how the mangaka very much relied on ~plot twists~ to try and make the story interesting.

Art: 9

I love the art. Every panel is drawn well, the details are astounding. The author never holds back on the gore and aside from the story it's everything you could want.

Character: 4

At first I was captivated by the characters, especially Machiya, our mc. However as the story progresses, his character quickly devolves into one that is extremely easy to hate. The female characters absolutely carry the manga, they're the only ones with ANY personality and depth to them and just outshine the rest of the cast. But as you can imagine, since this work is just a cesspit of fanservice and nsfw content, the women in the manga don't really get any chance to shine outside of being used for sex appeal.

Enjoyment: 4

My interest in the manga started off at a 10 and devolved as the story went on, there's only so much enjoyment you can get out of a repetitive storyline. Everything became predictable but at the same time I never knew what to expect as there was no real story to it.

Overall: 4

Even though I loved the female characters and the art, those 2 factors alone were not enough to justify how awful this manga is. At this point I seriously wish the author would just end the work, the longer he drags it on the more he ruins the work. There was a potential for a good ending but instead of giving the readers what they wanted, a satisfying end to a long journey, another arc began again. If you want to save your time from disappointment I would recommend reading the 12 volumes and stopping there, make up your own ending because the author won't give us one.
