Koe no Katachi review
Story:
Like the one-shot, but better. It's a very strong narrative with excellent character arcs and events that never go beyond believability, despite the characters going a little off. It's a soft progression that makes for an excellent climax that helps tie together the important of growth and identity.

While the actual story and important events are great, the direction that Koe no Katachi takes as the story continues is a little off the rails. There are 2 primary characters, but the latter events spend a lot of time discussing supporting characters that, while very much connected to our leads, aren't nearly as compelling and interesting enough. Perhaps with more time they could have become more interesting, but that too is a problem, as more time should have been spent between the two leads as well, rather than time spent with the ensemble cast.

However, the above gripe isn't fatal. The narrative pulls these problems off well because of its length, despite its length also being a vice. It's this odd, rickety balance that shouldn't work but somehow remains acceptable.

The biggest issue I have with Koe no Katachi has to do with the pervasive theme that there is no such thing as moral absolution. This may seem strange as it is clear there is right and wrong in the beginning of the work: bullying is bad. However, the ending seems to lead towards a notion that everyone has faults but as long as everyone is working through them, There shouldn't be any outward repercussions to their actions. The natural repercussions of one's actions (i.e. Ishida bullying Nishimiya, then later being bullied himself) negates the sins they've committed.

My big issue with the narrative running on this moral is that in doing something bad, bad happens to you (karma), but then ultimately it balances to a good. This is untrue because of death. Death is a bad event that happens that never gets resolved and the individual who suffers it cannot return from it. I am not trying to pull something out of my butt here, but showing how if we extend this theme, moral, what-have-you, to all things (and the narrative speaks to this theme as though it is applicable to every good and bad thing) then it must be compared to the epitome of bad things: death.

Because of this, many characters are able to do bad things with people not reacting to them in a normal manner. This is not so much in the beginning of the manga but near the end. It becomes incredibly irritating and goes from being a believable story to characters that are nothing more than representations of a theme/moral. I should not respond to a character in this way. They should be believable the entire narrative, and their believability should represent the theme, not the theme force me to believe it.

Art:
Motions and facial expressions reach an all new high. Since one the characters cannot hear and reserves her voice for 2 scenes, it's necessary for her reactions to feel fluid and realistic. Thankfully, this was achieved easily. There's an extreme brilliance to the character art within Koe no Katachi and I found not on their interactions to be eye-catching but the environments around them as well.

My only issue is that the world felt limited. Hallways, streets, small shops. Very few settings were used to help amplify the liveliness of the world. This would be passable if our main handicap was blindness, not deafness, but I digress.

Character:
So much depth. However, I covered my issues with how the characters are treated in the above Story section. Outside of that, character designs are excellent and I found the 2 leads to be quite endearing despite the fact that they aren't shown spending enough time together. I don't want fluff, but I wanted to see them discuss things more often to create a stronger bond.

Enjoyment:
Very enjoyable. I've already recommended it to a few friends. The premise makes for a comfortable and unique slice-of-life that doesn't glorify trashy themes, and the characters aren't one-dimensional. If you haven't read this, definitely give it a try. It's fairly short.

Made in Abyss review
I was wrong. This manga is infinitely more disturbing than Madoka Magicka. Hhem. Anyway. Saw the first two episodes and then slid right into this manga like I've done nothing else in months. There was this quality that just hooked me.

After a while I lost steam but didn't grow disillusioned. The Abyss itself is like an echo chamber...more specifically, its layers--there aren't many things going on overall besides the mysteries and the adventure (spoiler: there's no big bad most of the time). I think this is natural as per the narrative/world structure of this manga which I'll give it brownie points for--structuring arcs of interest and certain characters is only natural. I just wish there was more linking them (in maybe a more One Piece like way). Like, an additional faction or a recurring dark horse character. I would have also liked another character perspective on the surface or something. Human society+the government itself seems so dead and irrelevant. I thought we were gonna get something more on Leader, a hint or a perspective shift, and then there's nothing.

But I gotta say that this is forgivable. The vacuum nature does add to the general sense of being isolated and trapped and packs on interest/power/urgency to the journey which is cool. The revelations happen at a nice pace as well and they at least have wider consequences. Well, retrospectively. Still waiting on whether or not the last "boss" defeat changes anything. Also, the White Whistles waiting below is so freakin' hype--the two ones that have shown up were absolutely wonderful. All the characters being left behind also adds to the belivability of the descent...if we were cast to someone on the surface, our sense of being lost in the abyss would weaken. More brownie points to this freakin manga for turning what should be its weaknesses into strengths. Hhem. Tangent over.

Characters: adorable mostly. Though, yeah, a few of them seem like moe fuel - you can tell when most of the important side characters look like female moeblobs - not gonna lie. This doesn't mean their character development is any less nice or tragic when it does happen.

The first (and only??) real villain was a freakin' badass. Shame about the being temporary part. Boo. Maybe the real villain is just the abyss? Conflict: kids v. setting

Controversy: Let it be know that while Made in Abyss is one of those manga you wouldn't really recommend unless the person has disturbed tastes or is into adventure, or just likes cute things being thrown at horrific things (I think it's an actual taste you can have? I kinda like it for non fetish reasons). It definitely doesn't shy away from any sort of body stuff. Yeah, I can't ignore it. You can portray weird stuff like this manga does in a totally harmless and innocent way. But, sometimes, it just doesn't. Be warned if you're easily disgusted.

Art: will melt your heart (n-not that this happens in this manga). The looseness of some of the designs is amazing--especially in the case of Oven's personality shifts being portrayed by the wild inkiness. Cool stuff.

There's a lot of visual thought put into the ecosystems and "science" of the abyss, which is cool. The only downside, like I mentioned before, is that we don't know much about the f'ed up government which enables this delving, or of society itself outside of Lysa's auntie--"But is it really a good idea?" We get that the Abyss is sorta like a religion, the delvers heroes, with an underlying dark doubt in some, like auntie. We don't really see anything much, visually, of the other delvers. It's kinda weird.

But why the hell do I still rate it a 10 with all my complaints? Well, for one thing, I'm an expert complainer. Let me now try to be an expert praiser.

Its loving attention to detail, amazing art won me over. Moreover, the fact that there's BARELY ANY manga like this--call it perverted or not, but you don't get much with this sort of creativity. The emotional peaks are legendary and there's a lot of cute character moments. You as the reader are compelled to go to the bottom of the abyss, too, and that sense of sublime unknowing and curiosity is a rarity in manga. (Let me also say that the abyss is crazy! It's almost like this gigantic being that wants to suck people in and keep them in it) I think we get a lot of that type of thing, but rarely so consistently powerful and alluring. So...do I recommend Made in Abyss? Er. Maybe? I don't know. One hell of an experience is what it is.

10/10 because I want more manga to make the reader feel full of velocity and adventurous spirit. Also, to be darker without losing its sparkling hopeful highs.

Made in Abyss review
I came into this series knowing nothing about the story. The anime is praised seven ways 'til Sunday but I thought I'd check out the source material before giving the anime a try. Boy, was that a mistake.

The worldbuilding and lore is interesting. A colony of people live in an enormous pit that descends into the planet and it's the size of an entire continent. Explorers, ranked by colored whistles, are chosen to descend and collect relics that could help their society thrive...only to break down relics to be made into white whistles—the highest rank an explorer can get. If an explorer obtains a good enough relic, they will earn more accolades and it could put them up for a promotion. The lower the explorers descend, the higher the chances of altitude sickness and death. The design for the environment and the monsters are stunning and creative. The art style, while serviceable and sometimes beautiful, is made up of unpolished pencil sketches. Everything after that is where the series fails.

The manga has a mature rating for something about kids. I thought that was odd and, now that I've read the first volume, I wonder how it was ever greenlit. First of all, the society sends orphans into the pit as free labor so there's a complete lack of regard for child safety and labor laws. That's not even the worst of it. Made In Abyss contains depictions of children in...compromising positions. The main character—a 10-year-old orphaned girl—is shown naked, tied up in rope bondage, with ahegao face, and strung up to be displayed by an adult in the first chapter. You need to draw the line somewhere and that line definitely should not go that far.

Look, I am by no means a prude but I hope we can all agree that it shouldn't be acceptable for an adult to so much as think about drawing and writing underage girls in inappropriate ways. I hope that the anime is nothing like the source material, but I don't know if I can get over my initial impressions.

Fukushuu Kyoushitsu review
Revenge Classroom is exactly the same thing you've probably seen in many other typical edgy works; lots of gore, shock factor, dumb characters and ridiculous plot twists that make no sense. What truly makes it work is...absolutely nothing actually, I have no real idea why anyone would like this.

The story is basically the main character taking revenge on everyone in her class because...reasons. Like sure, quite a few of the characters are despicable (and by despicable I mean that's their only personality trait), but she basically sets out to murder everyone including bystanders and even people who may have helped her in the past.

What truly baffles me is the LOGIC. She has no reason why she's hurting a good portion of the people she's hurting, and she feels little guilt about her actions. Her motives are basic, but somehow has no problem being every bit as bad as the bullies who murdered her. Actually, I don't think any of her bullies murdered someone, so she's actually worse than they are.

She's extremely self-centered and bitchy, refusing to be sympathetic to other people and their issues, instead preferring to view the world through her shallow and extremely narrow mindset. I can't think of any reason why any sane person would sympathize with her.

The sad part is that the manga portrays everyone who opposes her as though they're evil, savage people who we're supposed to despise, rather than our main character not realizing that, you know, they're human beings with their own set of issues. And yes, some of our victims are simply people our main character didn't try to understand then put the blame on them. It makes absolutely no sense.

The other characters can literally be described with one line; the seemingly perfect class rep who's not so perfect, the dude who acts tough and turns out to be a coward, the clingy (calling yuri undertones folks) friend who helps her out, and so on. All of their traits are taken to extremes, but that's all that's memorable about them. In fact, I marathoned all 14 chapters available at the time of this writing less than 15 minutes ago and I can't even remember their names. Yes, they're so forgettable that you remember their deaths/getting bullied more than their actual personalities. I'm not kidding.

Can I mention how almost everything that happens in this manga is so overblown and ridiculous that it removes reader engagement completely? Seriously, the characters here need to chill the hell out and stop overreacting to everything. Nothing is portrayed in a morally gray, subtle way and everything is just...one dimensional and bland, hoping that we, the readers will fall for this.

The manga also has a bizarre habit of making itself seem way more intelligent than it actual is. First couple of chapters, for example; the main character apparently planned some elaborate revenge for two whole months, and that revenge involved putting a letter in a delinquent's bicycle to beat up another delinquent. Yes, it's just as anti-climactic as I just described it.

Artwork looks alright, nothing to really write home about but nothing too exceptional. So pretty average.

Overall, if you enjoy stupid, self-centered leads who refuse to sympathize with others and see the world through one perspective and refuse to budge on that or care about anything other than herself, as well as ridiculously simplistic strategies, edginess so over the top that it makes Akame ga Kill look subtle, then I can safely say that this manga is for you.

Unless you enjoy intentionally reading bad manga (like I do) please stay away.
