Made in Abyss review
I should say this first and foremost: beyond chapter 30, this is no longer for the faint of heart. The writer is hellbent on making you as uncomfortable as possible when reading and by god does he do a brilliant job at it, and not in a "uhh i shouldn't be reading this" uncomfortable.

Story: 10
Due to the excellent worldbuilding and the fact that the author has hammered home that basically anything is possible in the Abyss, nothing feels forced or deus-ex-machina. The driving force for the main cast is easy to understand and easy to root for, and the obstacles they face along the way genuinely do feel like walls instead of speedbumps (that is a major issue I find with other stories, it never feels like what the protag is facing acts as a genuine threat). Combine this with mini-arcs that hit an uncomfortable nerve (most notably the arc from ~ch40-current), the world around them feels truly hostile and serves as the obstacle.
These uncomfortable arcs feel well integrated into the story, and the author does not include them for shock value or to make the story "edgy" and "gritty". It serves to show the harsh reality of life in the Abyss, and it does so excellently.

Art: 8
I don't have much to say about the art. It's consistent, it looks nice, and it does its job well. It doesn't come anywhere near Murata's level or anything, but I can't think of any faults in it either.

Characters: 9
This would have been a 10 if Riko and Reg were not children; I find that adults have more complex reasons and reasoning that allows for more meaningful interactions between each other and the environment. As it stands however, children being the main cast (apart from Nanachi) felt like the right choice, since it highlights the divide between their competence and the harshness of the Abyss. Them being children also helps so that we instead of see the world through youthful optimism and clarity, and opposed to the cynical professionalism an adult would have had to adopt (i.e., Ozen).
The author perfectly captures the innocence of youth without making either Riko or Reg feel too naive. When it comes down to it, they can both grit their teeth and soldier on, even if they lack technical experience. I would really like to touch on Riko's character, especially how she treats Reg, but that would go into spoiler territory; I would have also liked to touch on Nanachi, but you future readers will have to see that for yourself.

Enjoyment: 10
The characters' fleshed out personalities and clear drives are a breath of fresh air compared to many stories I've seen recently. The worldbuilding is elaborate without piling on too much exposition or unnecessary detail, and the way it poses as a threat to the characters feels very real, in that it is neither forced nor laughable.

Overall: 9.5, though I will have to round it down to 9.
Just go read it.

One Punch-Man review
Story: 10, very original story about a superhero who is so powerful he's nearly a god. Really reminds me of playing any video game where it's just way too easy and not challenging, or other cliché manga characters that quote "yes... I've been waiting for a challenge for years, finally someone to fight". Each arc makes me feel like "holy shit maybe this time Saitama will get a challenge", but at the end it's always a disappointment, thus I feel the deep connection with Saitama. I feel the same alongside him. My feels.

Art: 8, the characters and fight scenes are pretty amazing, villains are extremely detailed and the style is unique in its own, not so much Japanese, the author has his own design. The main protagonist is purposely drawn in a simplistic way to demonstrate how mundane and boring his life is.

Character: 8, there are only 24 chapters out right now, I've read 16 so far so it's a pretty new manga. Character development takes time, after reading the first few chapters I've grown keen to Saitama. Very unforgettable protagonist. Villains are pretty cliché though, although very entertaining. It's superhero themed so expect mad scientists, aliens, ninjas, over the top shit etc.

Enjoyment: 10, I've read 16 chapters straight and I really like it, I'm just taking my time from my lil interlude manga reading break to write this review. The humor is verrrrry funny, ironic, over the top and just my sense of funny:) just go read it. You won't regret it unless you simply dislike sci-fi / superheros which isn't the point of the story.

Overall: 9, pretty awesome manga so far, I'll need to update this review later since the manga itself is pretty much brand new. Go read it.

God Sider review
Maki Kouji's God Sider, published in WSJ for all but a year, from 1987 to 1988, is a largely forgotten work. There's an official (digital) release of all 8 volumes, yet there's virtually no information about the manga itself available in English, possibly due to being released with absolutely no fan fare or marketing from the publisher's behalf.

But as it is, God Sider is truly something worth checking, for the novelty factor and the chance to read one of the few WSJ battle shounen with a complete English translation.

So, what is God Sider about, and what is the appeal and reason someone should read this obscure title?

Well. God Sider is the story of a boy, who happens to be the son of Lucifer, Satan before his fall from grace. This boy, Reiki is suddenly becomes aware of his powers after his city is attacked by a group of demons, with the goal of awakening Satan from his slumber. That's the basic premise, which is simple enough, but the real appeal isn't in the depth of the story, the appeal if the overall absurdity and scale of the story, which escalates in each arc, which there are three in total of, and the graphic artwork.

God Sider is what you get when you throw in a bit of Go Nagai's work, some Fist of the North Star, which the author was originally an assistant for, and some Saint Seiyai like transformations. Then you add in a ton of gore, lots of vulgarity, some hilarious stereotypes of Americans, Buddhism, eroguro, and mass chaos and destruction. Also, some spontaneous power ups for good measure. If you like these things, are aren't looking for a well thought out story, and just pure battle manga, you're in for a good surprise! It totally pushes the boundaries for just how disgustingly graphic the genre can be. God Sider is an absolute blast that I want more people to experience!

*All 8 volumes are available digitally on Amazon and ComiXology for around 5 bucks a volume*

Becchin to Mandara review
Velveteen & Mandala is absolutely messed up to it's core but in the right way. It feels like a B Grade Japanese Psychological Experimental film more than a conventional seinen manga. The art is a bit hazy and the manga has a tendency of using weird angles to focus on the characters. This adds to the whole vibe of how the main characters are messed up in the head due to their upbringing in this dystopian Tokyo that is midst of a war.

The story centers around two highschool girls, Velveteen and Mandala who lives inside a tank on the riverside just outside the city. They are tasked by a certain powerful group to exterminate Zombie like creatures that are being dropped by huge airplanes on the riverside where they live. The main two characters aren't friends, they are not really enemies either. For the most part Velveteen loves to hate Mandala but they seem to always fall back to this weird state where they keep on working and living together.

This manga isn't for everyone. I mean it's filled with every messed up shenanigans you can think of. I mean this manga has gore, profanity, necrophilia, attempted gangrape?.....I don't know what you can call that. so you get that you need a strong stomach to digest these. This manga is laced with quirky and sharp dark humor with inappropriate but chuckle generating comments on our lifestyle and the downward spiral of humanity under such conditions of dystopia. This manga is pretty pretentious and for the most part the themes are all over the place when put into a context of a complete story but it's the type of pretentiousness that actually helps the manga to standout.

One of the things that I genuinely love about this manga is how brilliantly this manga can change it's tone from inappropriate jokes to such messed up reality with sharp turns that makes you go like that's quite funny to Fu** that's messed up!

It's not a manga that's perfect and a lot of it is up for interpretation so definitely people will have different opinions. If someone comes out and says that it's a pretentious gibberish dumpster fire, I won't really complain. It's upto the individual reader to decide what they take from this manga. I myself absolutely loved the entire thing despite it's shortcoming and although the themes individually can be very intriguing, they start falling apart when placed under a larger picture. Reading the manga made me feel the same feelings as I did when I had first watched Eraserhead and it's a damn good feeling atleast for me. It's only one volume that's just 14 chapters so maybe give it a shot.

Jisatsu Circle review
Well I've seen other reviews around here all crying disturbing or whatnots...

Story:6
Well I do not really think it's THAT disturbing... but rather a little disappointed in the execution of the manga. The mangaka is quite a master at executing grim stories... unfortunately I do not really see a very realistic portrait of this whole "Mitsuko" incident. Remember what people said about this Mitsuko... that she's something of a sage... that she brings tangible benefit to them, that they feel peaceful when they look at her.

O rite... and about the dead ppl bbs... it was not explained properly.. I think.

And there are a lot of spaces in-between some huge events, like after the train mass suicide incident did no police or counselors approach "the only girl who survived"? Besides, there are a lot of strange points, how no one complained many different high and middle school girls congregated at a school? And how did Saya get so many followers over a summer?

Well seeing this as done over a month I can't possibly say that much about it. But it's quite a pity... since most of the content seems to be mired in tragedy and horror. IMO, it wasn't very solid.

The ending wasn't that well too... I simply do not get how Kyouko and Saya suddenly got so well with each other again... it seems too rushed.

Art:7
I do not like the naked child scenes. But other than that it was still all right. Except for Yoko's face.... sometimes it looks a bit weird, especially the placement of her eyes.

Character:5
Some character development, mostly to justify the birth of 'Mitsuko-chan'.

Enjoyment:6
Argh it leaves a bad aftertaste and a bad during-taste too.

Overall:6
Overall, I do not like it but it's not that bad of a series. It is not a retelling of the original movie by the same name. It is modified by the mangaka with the permission of the original creator. And it was created within a month.

And PS. read the mangaka's other works like Picasso's ?? and 51 Ways to protect your Lover to catch his awesomeness^_^.

A Cat and a Bird review
Heads up before you read: A Cat and a Bird (or just Cat and Bird) is a Korean manhwa, which are read left to right instead of right to left like most manga fans are used to.

Story (6): The story of Cat and Bird is nothing spectacular. Unless you're into teen angst I wouldn't recommend it. It may be a bit deeper than your average shoujo or slice of life, but not by much, and at times it shows its age (there's no date on this thing, but I'm guessing it's a mid to late nineties piece.) Things like character relationships and time frames are often confusing and muddled. The bad art (which you can read more about below) often took me out of the serious tone the story was trying to create. Still, it's a short read, which I see as a plus, and was one of the main reasons I picked it up.

Art (3): Oh god my eyes! The art in this is horrendous as far as characters go! Everyone constantly looks stiff. Any time a character is holding something, or doing any sort of movement they look terrible. Faces look inhuman and fish like (yes I know this is a common complaint for manga but I swear this manhwa takes the cake in creating inhuman, ugly fish people.) Character design wise this manhwa definitely shows its age. I imagine the fashion choices in this would get a chortle even during the time it came out (again, I'm guessing the nineties.) In particular Hye Jung had me cringing at her outfits in at least half of the frames she was in! I didn't notice anything too bad about the backgrounds, but oh god the people!

Character (6):Outside of the complaints I listed above, there's nothing too offensive about the characters. I actually kind of liked Jin Young's character. Her trauma was understandable, though a bit melodramatic. Hye Jung fell into the standard "genki girl" trope, but she was a bit more fleshed out than most and nowhere near as annoying. The male characters were both pretty bland and had a minimal impact on the story as a whole, though the cram school teacher was at times a bit too invested in the lives of his students.

Enjoyment (6): I found myself enjoying this more in it's latter half, after I had adjusted to the bad art and the story began heating up. It never lit my world on fire, but I've definitely read worse manga and manhwa. It sometimes succeeded at creating the melancholy and thoughtful tone it aimed for, but more often than not it failed.

Overall (5): I'd say skip it unless you can stand terrible, dated art and are desperate for a short read with decent characters and teen angst. And if you are I'd recommend checking out River's Edge by Kyoko Okazaki, a manga that does a much better job of pulling off similar themes, before going anywhere near this manhwa.
